Daniel Ahmed is director of Acoustic Robotics Systems Lab (ARSL) and Associate Professor of Robotics and Biomedical Technology at the ARTORG Center for Biomedical Engineering Research, Faculty of Medicine, University of Bern. He leads an internationally recognized research programme in ultrasound microrobotics and translational acoustic technologies. Before joining the University of Bern, he was Assistant Professor of Acoustic Robotics for Life Sciences and Healthcare in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich. His research focuses on ultrasound-enabled microrobotics, implants, catheters, additive manufacturing, and microsystems for applications in life sciences, diagnostics, and translational medicine.
He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Engineering Science and Mechanics from The Pennsylvania State University. He has published in leading peer-reviewed journals, including Nature, Nature Electronics, Nature Machine Intelligence, Nature Materials, Nature Communications, PNAS, Science Robotics, Science Advances, Nano Letters, and Advanced Materials. He has secured national and European funding, including an ERC Starting Grant, ERC Proof of Concept, EIC Pathfinder Open, BRIDGE Discovery, and multiple SNSF and Innosuisse grants, as well as support from Swiss Cancer Research and the ISREC Foundation.
He has served as a reviewer for major funding agencies, including the ERC, DFG and ANR, and as a panel member for the Research Council of Norway in Nanotechnology, Microtechnology and Advanced Materials. His distinctions include the Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year 2021 in Engineering & Technology, the ETH Dandelion Entrepreneurship Award, and being named a DWI Fellow in 2026. He has also co-founded two start-ups, SONOROBOTICS and SONOSTENT, to translate ultrasound-based technologies into clinical applications.
